How to Reconnect With Your Inner Child Through Creativity
Dylan Moore, Founder Balanced Analysis LLC and Breaking Barriers University
Remember when you used to create just because? When you scribbled wildly with crayons, danced in your room without a care, or built whole worlds in your imagination?
Somewhere along the way, that freedom faded. Maybe you were told to be serious or grow up. Maybe life got too busy, and play became something you didn’t have time for.
But your inner child? They never left. They’re still inside you, waiting to be seen, waiting to be heard.
Reconnecting with your inner child through creativity isn’t about being good at art—it’s about feeling free again. It’s about creating without judgment, about letting yourself explore, play, and express without needing it to be perfect.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected, let’s talk about why creativity is the key to healing—and how you can start bringing that playful energy back into your life.
The Moment I Realized My Inner Child Was Waiting for Me
For years, I believed creativity had to be productive. I used to love drawing, writing, and making up stories—but as I got older, I started asking: Is this useful? Is this worth my time?
I traded play for productivity, and little by little, my creative side got quieter. Until one day, I found an old notebook filled with doodles and half-written stories from my childhood. Looking at those pages, I felt something stir—a part of me I had buried, waiting to come back to life.
That’s when I realized: Creativity isn’t about talent. It’s about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that feel joy, wonder, and freedom.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your creativity, I see you. But I also want you to know—it’s never too late to reclaim it.

Creativity as a Path to Inner Healing
Reconnecting with your inner child isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about healing the parts of you that never got to fully express themselves.
1. Your Inner Child Was Told to Be “Practical”
Many of us were taught that creativity wasn’t useful. That art, play, and imagination were distractions from real life. If you ever heard:
- Stop daydreaming and focus.
- You’re wasting time.
- You’re not good enough at that.
Then it makes sense why creativity feels foreign now. But your inner child still remembers the joy of creating just for the sake of it.
2. Creativity Gives Your Emotions a Voice
Sometimes, the feelings we struggle to express come out through creativity. Whether it’s through painting, writing, music, or movement, creativity lets us say what words sometimes can’t.
It’s not about making something “good.” It’s about making something true.
3. Play is Essential for Emotional Well-being
We don’t outgrow the need for play—we just stop giving ourselves permission for it. Creativity brings back that sense of wonder, curiosity, and fun that gets buried under responsibilities.
And when you create, you remind yourself: Life isn’t just about surviving. It’s about feeling alive.

3 Ways to Reconnect With Your Inner Child Through Creativity
1. Create Without Judgment
One of the biggest blocks to creativity? The fear of not being good enough.
Your inner child didn’t care about being good—they cared about feeling free. That’s the energy you need to reclaim.
Try this:
- Doodle with no plan—just let your hand move.
- Write a short story with no pressure to make it “perfect.”
- Sing, dance, or act silly like no one is watching.
The goal isn’t to create something impressive—it’s to create something true to you.
2. Revisit What You Loved as a Child
Think back to the things you used to love. What hobbies or creative outlets made you feel alive?
Ask yourself:
- What did I love doing as a kid?
- What kind of stories, music, or art made me feel seen?
- How can I bring a piece of that into my life now?
Whether it’s coloring, crafting, storytelling, or building, bringing childhood joy into adulthood is a powerful way to reconnect.
3. Give Yourself Permission to Play
Creativity doesn’t have to be serious. Let yourself play—without needing a reason.
Try this:
- Have a “creative playdate” with yourself—set aside an hour just to explore, create, or make something.
- Visit an art store, bookstore, or toy shop and see what excites you.
- Make something purely for fun, with no goal except enjoyment.
Creativity isn’t about producing. It’s about feeling.

Rise Fierce and Free
If you’ve been longing to feel more connected to yourself, to experience joy without pressure, I want you to know: Your inner child is still waiting for you. And they are so ready to create again.
So here’s my challenge for you: What’s one small way you can reconnect with creativity this week? Maybe it’s picking up an old hobby, trying something new, or simply giving yourself permission to play.
Whatever it is, take that step. Because you, my friend, are rising. You are healing. And you are so much more creative than you’ve been told to believe.
